Workshops & Registration
Session 1: 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. ($12 per participant)
Bunnies (Ages 4+)
Click here to sign up SOLD OUT
A parent or guardian must stay with their child through this program.
Hop in the garden and around the farm to look for signs of our local bunnies, eastern cotton tail rabbits. We try to keep the bunnies from eating too much of our garden but those adorable furry creatures somehow find a way. We will learn about the bunnies favorite plants to snack on and try out some tricks to keep them from eating too much. We will finish off the program with making a fun bunny craft for participants to take home.
Seeds & Soil (Ages 7-9)
Join as we prepare our farm for the growing season! In this class you will help us fertilize, organize, and seed one of our garden beds! You’ll even go home with your own seeded flax plant to raise!
Farm Chemistry (Ages 10+)
Farmers in 1790s New England didn’t know the chemical formulas of acids and bases, but they still knew how to use them. We need acids and bases to make soap, treat unbalanced soil, cook, and many other things, but they can also be dangerous. Join us to learn about the rules people taught each other to protect themselves from these fascinating chemicals. We will use cabbages to create a colorful acid/base indicator, and lemons to create secret messages with invisible ink.
BREAK: 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Try out some historic games in between classes in the Coggeshall Work Yard! Free for all class participants. (This will be an independent activity not led by an instructor; pre-registration not required).
Session 2: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ($12 per participant)
Bees (Ages 4+)
Click here to sign up SOLD OUT
A parent or guardian must stay with their child through this program.
Join us to learn about farmers’ Buzzy Busy Buddies: Bees! We will see what bees see and dance like bees dance. We will learn about their eyes, their antennae, and how they communicate where they find flowers. You will create a tiny bee friend to bring home.
Apple Orchards (Ages 7+)
Head out on the farm to identify apple trees by their leaves, flowers, bark, and shape. Hear about the long history of apple trees and the importance of apples for 18th century farmers. Learn about some of the challenges of growing an orchard like pests and fungus. Create your own artistic apple blossom after seeing some of the flowering trees or pictures.
Baskets for Beginners (Ages 10+)
Before plastics, we used baskets! These woven wonders helped us with all our transportation needs, from harvest to market to household storage. So ditch the Tupperware, and come master the skills of weaving by creating a basket of your own! We will build our own baskets to help with the spring harvest. If you want a pretty new container to store some trinkets, then this is a craft for you!
