Interested in a career in museums, education, or agriculture? Coggeshall Farm Museum is now accepting applications for summer internships. Participants in the Internship Program will gain valuable practical knowledge and job experience as well as a paid stipend. This year, we’re offering an Agriculture Internship and and Education/Interpretation Internship.
Please note: As a part of the partnership between Coggeshall Farm Museum and Old Sturbridge Village, the Village’s Coordinator of Interns and Fellows will be assisting Coggeshall staff with the review of applications and facilitating interviews. Agriculture Internship
Coggeshall Farm Museum seeks a college student or recent graduate interested in gaining direct hands-on experience with an educational agriculture program. The intern will work under the supervision of the museum’s Executive Director to develop and expand existing programs. The scope of work will include sustainable agriculture, heritage breed animals, and heirloom vegetables. The interns’ duties will be designed around their experience, education, and interests, but will be based on the Museum Program department’s needs. Orientation to the museum and specific training to complete the tasks will be provided. The intern will have the opportunity to experience the workings of New England’s largest outdoor history museum.
Location:
This internship is located at Coggeshall Farm Museum in RI, an Old Sturbridge Village Inc. museum. Set on 48 acres of coastal farmland in Bristol, Rhode Island, Coggeshall Farm recreates the daily experience of tenant farmers on a salt marsh farm in the late 18th century. With a new, innovative partnership with Old Sturbridge Village, Coggeshall Farm will expand and enhance the visitor experience through live interpretation, programming, historic structures, heirloom plants and gardens, and heritage-breed animals.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent, agriculture educational program preferred
- Animal care and handling preferred
- Experience in farm based educational programs
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences.
Responsibilities:
- Daily care of, sheep, pigs, and chickens
- Cleaning and maintenance of animal pens and enclosures
- Assisting in breeding management – including schedules and assisting in the birth of young stock
- Seasonal Animal work – including sheep shearing, dairy cattle care and milking, and butchering
- Planting, cultivating, and harvesting field crops
- Haymaking, including mowing, drying and storing hay by hand
- Pasture management, including fence repair and the production of fence stock
- Deliver public programing to OSV’s diverse audiences on related agricultural topics
Applicants must be able to:
- Regularly lift loads of 50lbs
- Work outside in all seasons and weather
Hours:
The internship is available from May through August. The 40-hour/week work schedule varies based on needs at the farm and the intern’s academic schedule. The farm is open on the weekends so there will be either a Saturday or Sunday in your schedule each week. There is a $3,000 stipend available for the 4-month internship (prorated if internship is under 4 months).

Education & Interpretation Internship

The intern will work under the supervision of the museum’s Executive Director to develop new and expand existing educational programs. The scope of work will include educational programs on a wide variety of topics from textiles to salt marsh farming. The interns’ duties will be designed around their experience, education, and interests, but will be based on the Museum Program department’s needs. Orientation to the museum and specific training to complete the tasks will be provided. The intern will have the opportunity to experience the workings of New England’s largest outdoor history museum.

- Successful completion of two years in an undergraduate program with a core concentration in Education, History, Art History, or related field
- Experience in farm based educational programs
- Must be comfortable and enthusiastic about working directly with children
- A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences
Responsibilities:
- Develop education programs; conducting program research, planning and lesson plans
- Lead different stations for field trip activities
- Assist with Family Programs, Scouting Programs, and other Museum Education programs
- Cleaning and maintenance of educational materials
- Assist with daily operations of the farm planting, cultivating, and harvesting field crops
- Lead Saturday tours of the farm for the general public
- Deliver public programing to the Museum’s diverse audiences on related 1790 salt marsh tenant farm topics
Applicants must be able to:
